Addition Squares for Kids Aged 6 to 9
Each square has nine cells: two numbers and their sum in every row, and the same down every column. Three, four or five are missing, and a blank can only be filled once its row or its column has a single unknown left. It is the one exercise on this site where the child has to look before writing, which is why it is worth more than a row of separate sums.
It Marks Itself, Twice
A wrong number breaks its row and its column at once, so the mistake shows in two places without anyone marking it. The bottom-right cell adds up all four starting numbers, and checking that it does is the part children like most.
